    Wallace Hume Carothers, he was a chemist who taught organic chemistry at Illinois and Harvard. Since in college, he is so clever that it was nicknamed a professor or doctor.     The Experiment of Global No. 1 Spandex
    Polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMG), a petroleum-based compound,
    is the primary raw material for spandex.
    Hyosung TNC stands as the sole Korean company to independently develop and manufacture PTMG.
    We dedicated six years to PTMG research which determines pivotal factors for spandex's properties and successfully identified the optimal combination for producing spandex.
    By using less PTMG, we also explore methods to minimize our carbon footprint.
    After years of research to discover greener raw materials that can be an alternative to PTMG, we have finally come up with a textile known as regen spandex.
    The Triumphant Return of Spandex Waste
    The production process of spandex is accompanied by a substantial amount of byproducts. The byproducts are industrial waste, which shares similarities with the raw material but poses a burden on the environment. So, we came up with the idea to collect the waste and process them for reuse. This is how the history of "regen® spandex" began.
    100% Pre-consumer Recycled Yarn
    Pre-consumer recycling refers to the recycling of materials prior to their delivery to an end-user. Similar to gathering leftover dough to bake fresh bread, we meticulously remove impurities from the byproducts generated in the production process, finely chop them, melt them down, and put them into the same process as regular yarn to produce fully recycled spandex.
    1 ton of regen spandex has an effect equivalent to planting 889 pine trees
    As regen spandex can be quickly set at lower temperatures compared to conventional spandex during production, it can generate fewer emissions to that extent. Producing 1 ton of regen spandex is equivalent to planting 889 30-year-old pine trees. Despite the significant reduction in petrochemical raw materials and energy consumption, our spandex products have maintained the same quality as the world's no. 1 market share holder.

    Turning Waste PET Bottles into High-functional Polyester
    Another recycling textile developed following the nylon made of waste fishing nets.
    regen® polyester is 100% post-consumer recycled yarn created through a meticulous process of collecting, sorting, washing, and grinding waste plastic bottles.
    regen® polyester began as a project to tackle 300,000 tons of discarded plastic bottles annually and now it has generated significant interest and demand for recycled fibers both at home and abroad.
    World's First to Obtain the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) Certification
    In 2008, when regen polyester was first commercialized, it obtained the GRS certification from Control Union, a Dutch eco-certification company. It is the world's first polyester recycled fiber to obtain such a certification.
    First Korean Company to Receive the Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) Certification
    Hyosung TNC, through regen® polyester, actively engages in environmental protection initiatives. With a focus on safeguarding the ocean, marine life, and humans from plastic waste (taking up 80% of marine litter), Hyosung TNC has undertaken various projects. Among these is regen® Ocean Polyester, which utilizes waste plastic bottles collected from the ocean. Remarkably, regen Ocean Polyester became the first in Korea to receive the OBP certification.
    What is Ocean Bound Plastic?
    The OBP certification was developed by Zero Plastic Oceans,
    a non-governmental organization dedicated to addressing plastic pollution issues,

    The World’s First Corn-based Spandex
    Hyosung TNC is a pioneer in developing and commercializing spandex derived from corn extract, a plant-based raw material. It is a sustainable material that can reduce carbon emissions throughout the extraction and manufacturing process of plant-based materials. regen Bio-based is made of non-edible industrial corn cultivated using an eco-friendly farming method certified by the US Department of Agriculture.
    Gained the Eco-Product Certification Mark
    regen Bio-based has received the prestigious global green certification, "Eco-Product Certification Mark," from Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) in Switzerland. Established in 1878, SGS is a renowned inspection, verification, testing, and certification organization. It provides certificates to products that utilize environmentally friendly raw materials, pose no harm to humans, and are manufactured following eco-friendly practices under ESG management.
    Reducing Water Consumption and Carbon Emissions
    According to the life cycle assessment (LCA) results, regen Bio-based requires 39% less water and generates 23% less CO2 compared to conventional spandex. For every 1 ton produced, the carbon emissions reduced are equivalent to the amount absorbed by 378 pine trees in a year. regen Bio-based maintains the same elasticity and resilience as regular spandex, making it suitable for all applications where conventional spandex is utilized.

    From Nylon Yarn to Core Material for Hydrogen Fuel Tanks
    regen INDUSTRY finds applications in various fields such as auto parts, electrical and electronic devices, cable ties, films, and fishing nets. Furthermore, it has made its way into the liners of high-pressure vessels used for storing and transporting hydrogen, a pivotal element of renewable energy.
